macOS-oriented workflow

Test the key before the shortcut

Press Command, Option, Control, and Shift individually so a reserved combination cannot hide the first observation.
Check Delete, Return, arrows, and ordinary letter positions against the Mac-oriented visual.
Test the complete shortcut in the browser or application where it is meant to work.
If available, compare the same action on an external keyboard while keeping the application and settings unchanged.
For top-row or Fn/Globe behavior, verify the system action as well as any event visible here.

Printed legends and browser codes

A browser commonly reports Command as Meta, Option as Alt, the Mac Delete position as Backspace, and Return as Enter. The visual translates positions into familiar Mac labels without identifying an exact device.

Command and Meta

Left and right Command positions are shown separately when the browser exposes MetaLeft and MetaRight. Command shortcuts may be handled by macOS or the browser and are not globally prevented.

Option and Alt

The key printed Option ⌥ commonly uses physical codes AltLeft and AltRight. Option can also enter alternate characters, so the resulting character is not used to identify the key.

Delete and Backspace

Apple's forward-facing Delete legend usually occupies the code position browsers call Backspace. Extended keyboards may include a separate forward-delete key with different behavior.

Fn and Globe

Fn/Globe, Mission Control, brightness, media, and input-source actions may be handled by the keyboard, macOS, or system settings before a normal event reaches this page. An unobserved Fn/Globe action is not a failed key.

Command, Control, and Shift

These modifiers may reach the page alone while a completed shortcut is handled by macOS, the browser, or the active application. Test left and right positions separately where the layout provides them.

Function keys and shortcuts

Top-row keys may perform media or system actions by default, and browser-reserved or application-reserved shortcuts may be intercepted before this page can observe the complete combination. Use the Function Keys Test for the browser-safe guided subset.

Limits and privacy

This browser test confirms only observed events, not Apple hardware condition. Tested, pressed, and last-key state stay in memory and are cleared on reset or reload; nothing is persisted or transmitted.

Compare key position, shortcut context, and keyboard source

Test a key by itself before testing its shortcut. When available, compare the built-in keyboard with an external keyboard in the same browser and application.

Modifier appears alone; shortcut does not

The browser can observe Command, Option, Control, or Shift separately while macOS, browser, or application shortcut handling intercepts the combination. Review the shortcut where it is meant to work.

Built-in position is absent; external equivalent appears

The difference is more localized to the built-in keyboard path or its configuration. This page cannot identify a switch, internal connection, firmware, or operating-system cause.

Both keyboards fail only in one application

Check that application's shortcut assignments, input mode, accessibility permissions, and remapping before drawing a keyboard conclusion.

Fn/Globe or media action works without a visible event

The keyboard or macOS may have handled it outside the normal browser event path. An absent event is expected for some system-level functions.

Printed character differs from the visual label

The active keyboard layout and Option-modified character output can differ from the physical-position code. This test identifies position, not the text character produced.

Mac position code observed

Observed: Command, Option, Control, Shift, Delete, or Return produces the corresponding physical-position code.
May mean: The page received that position using standard web event terminology.
Does not prove: That every macOS or application shortcut containing the key will run.

Shortcut intercepted outside the page

Observed: A modifier appears by itself, but a reserved combination does not complete in the test surface.
May mean: macOS, browser chrome, or the active application may own the shortcut.
Does not prove: A failed Command, Option, Control, or Shift key.
Next step: Verify the modifier alone and review the shortcut assignment in the relevant settings.

System action without a web event

Observed: Fn/Globe, media, brightness, Mission Control, or input-source behavior occurs without a standard event.
May mean: The Mac keyboard or macOS may be handling the command directly.
Does not prove: That the system key is unresponsive.
