Mac event terminology

Printed legends and browser codes differ

A browser commonly reports Command as Meta, Option as Alt, the Mac Delete key at the physical Backspace position, and Return at Enter. This page translates those codes into familiar Mac labels without claiming to identify your exact device.

Command and Meta

Left and right Command positions are shown separately when the browser exposes MetaLeft and MetaRight. Command shortcuts may be handled by macOS or the browser and are not globally prevented.

Option and Alt

The key printed Option ⌥ commonly uses physical codes AltLeft and AltRight. Option can also enter alternate characters, so the resulting character is not used to identify the key.

Delete and Backspace

Apple's forward-facing Delete legend usually occupies the code position browsers call Backspace. Extended keyboards may include a separate forward-delete key with different behavior.

Fn and Globe

Fn/Globe, Mission Control, brightness, media, and input-source actions may be handled by the keyboard, macOS, or system settings before a normal event reaches this page. An unobserved Fn/Globe action is not a failed key.

Shortcuts and variations

MacBook generations and Apple full-size keyboards vary in top-row legends, Touch ID, arrow shape, and extra keys. Browser and system shortcuts can navigate away or perform their normal action during testing.

Limits and privacy

This browser test confirms only observed events, not Apple hardware condition. Tested, pressed, and last-key state stay in memory and are cleared on reset or reload; nothing is persisted or transmitted.
